Lanakila (Victory) is the 4th episode of the first season in the remake version of Hawaii Five-0.

Synopsis[]

Five-0 is called in to locate a dangerous escaped prisoner and to find him they need to determine his reasons for escaping. Steve's sister, Mary Ann, arrives from the mainland for a visit and brings trouble of her own.

Plot[]

At a stand-off at Halawa Correctional Facility, it's chaos as the police and SWAT attempt to defuse a hostage situation. This gives fugitive Walton Dawkins a chance to escape which he does by posing as a guard while a prison guard poses as a fake prisoner.

Due to Dawkins's violent past, the newly renamed Hawaii Five-0 Task Force are given the case of recapturing Dawkins. They soon dig into Dawkins's past and discover that Dawkins is targeting a couple: Craig Ellers and Dana Thorpe.

As soon as they arrive in Hawaii and head into their hotel suite, Dawkins ambushes the couple. He shoots Dana, critically wounding her before kidnapping Ellers.

Steve, Kono and Chin arrive at the suite and find Dana bleeding heavily.

As Kono calls for an ambulance, Steve is forced to perform CPR to keep Dana alive long enough for the paramedics to arrive.

Further investigation soon reveals that Dawkins isn't after the couple after all but actually Ellers who in the past was also Dawkins's partner in crime.

At a bank, Dawkins comments that he believed that Ellers or "Paul Stark" died. Ellers states Dawkins saw him pass out and that he survived Dawkins shooting him.

Ellers eventually withdraws the money and returns to Dawkins, only for Steve and Chin to arrive. As such, Dawkins flees, first by road before he hijacks a helicopter, taking the pilot and a family hostage.

The helicopter eventually lands on an island with Steve and Chin soon joining them. As they catch up, they realize that Dawkins has executed the pilot and that the lives of the family he kidnapped may be in danger too.

Steve catches up to Dawkins and as Chin shields the family, Steve shoots Dawkins, killing the convict.

Meanwhile, Danny's participation in the case is limited as he recovers from a knee injury while also using a cane to help him walk.

Steve's younger sister, Mary McGarrett arrives in from the mainland and as she catches up with her brother, she also meets Steve's girlfriend, Catherine Rollins.

With the case solved, Steve brings Dana to Ellers/Paul Stark with Dana having a reunion with Ellers.

Later, as Steve brings her back to her room, Dana states that everyone deserves a little forgiveness.

Steve and the team return to the H50 offices to learn from Kamekona that Mary has already gone.

Steve eventually finds his sister at their father's grave and the episode ends with the two of them sitting at their father's grave, both siblings lost in thought.

Quotes[]

Dr. Teddy Oh: How did you say you were injured, again?
Danny Williams: Well, originally, uh playing high school baseball. But, uh, it hasn't bothered me in a really long time.
Dr. Teddy Oh: Anything traumatic recently, with the knee?
Danny Williams: Yeah, actually. I got a new partner.
Dr. Teddy Oh: (chuckling) I was thinking more about a physical injury.
Danny Williams: No, no, this.. this guy is.. like a physical injury, Doc. Ah, ten minutes after meeting him, I get shot and blasted backwards through a window - okay? A few hours after that, he drives a car - not joking - onto the deck of a Chinese freighter ship. And, yes, I was in it... The car, not the ship.
Dr. Teddy Oh: He drove a car onto a boat?
Danny Williams: Yeah. He's an animal. And I sorta get the feeling that he's just getting warmed up.
Dr. Teddy Oh: Ouch.
Danny Williams: Yeah. So, how do I fix it?
Dr. Teddy Oh: You get a new partner.

Danny Williams: Is that your sister in the car?
Steve McGarrett: Yeah, I just came straight from the airport.
Danny Williams: You realize if she were a dog, you could get a ticket for leaving her in the car like that?
Steve McGarrett: Can we focus, please?
Danny Williams: Yeah... (points at Steve) Why do you have aneurism face?
Steve McGarrett: (wearing aneurism face) I don't have aneurism face.
Danny Williams: She gave you aneurism face?
Steve McGarrett: How many times in a row can you ask me the same question?
Danny Williams: "You gotta seek first to understand, then to be understood." It's one of seven principles of all successful people.
Steve McGarrett: I will literally pay you cash to stop talking, okay?

(Steve is playing basketball against a prison inmate in exchange for information)
Danny Williams: got a tip. So you know, the other guy putting the ball in the hoop - is.. is bad.
Steve McGarrett: Danno, shut up, all right..
Danny Williams: Do me a favor and don't call me Danno, huh.
Skeet (prison inmate): Yo, how long you two been married?

Chin Ho Kelly: That's it. Matches the description of the car Dawkins stole.
(Kona and Chin walk up to the car being guarded by a HPD officer)
Kono Kalakaua (flashing her badge): Five-0. we'll take it from here.

KameKona: How's it, haole?
(Danny and Kamikona grasp hands in greeting)
Danny Williams: Shamu.
KameKona: What's with the stick? You got slammed in a cruncher?
Danny Williams: Um, I don't know what that means.
KameKona: Sand facial. You ate a big one, huh?
Steve McGarrett: There was no surfing accident. He, uh, he busted his knee getting out of bed.
KameKona: How white can you get?
Danny Williams: Pretty white.

Sofia Archuleta: Can I get you guys something?
Steve McGarrett: Yeah. Walton Dawkins.
Sofia Archuleta: Excuse me?
Danny Williams: Well, yeah, first, Walton Dawkins, but then I would love some blueberry pancakes. I love pancakes in the afternoon. You like pancakes, Sofia?
Steve McGarrett: I like pancakes.
Danny Williams: You do?!
Steve McGarrett: Yeah.
Danny Williams: You seem more like a "napalm in the morning" kind of guy.
Steve McGarrett: Well... That, too, but...
Danny Williams: Well, I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Sofia.
Steve McGarrett: I'm just saying, it's a broad question.
Sofia Archuleta: Okay, who the hell are you guys?
(Steve slaps/lays down his badge on the table)
Danny Williams: Sofia, we know that you spoke to Dawkins this morning. And you seem like a reasonable, nice lady, who's just made some bad relationship decisions - which I can totally relate to! - so we're gonna give you a break.
Steve McGarrett: Yeah, I mean, this could really only go two ways. The first is, you sit down and you tell us what we want to know, then you finish your shift and you go home. The second.. is that we arrest you in front of all these nice customers and you lose your job.
Danny Williams: And I gotta get my pancakes to go.

Chin Ho Kelly: You got her (Catherine) to use a military recon satellite, and then you made a date?
Steve McGarrett: I'm a multi-tasker.

Trivia[]

  • The song playing at the beginning of the episode is the Rolling Stones- Gimme Shelter.
  • Danny hurting his knee was written in due to the fact that Scott Caan injured his own knee while performing jiu-jitsu.
  • John McGarrett's plot location is marked "Y 3531". However the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific does not have a section Y according to the map of it at found on www.cem.va.gov . Looking at where Steve parks and looks at Mary in the final scene, John appears to be buried in section D.
