I've really enjoyed reading this write-up about the 1968 series. I grew up watching this, but pretty much forgot about it until the 2010 series came out. There's just something about the old ways of policing that intrigue me. I started watching the '68 series again, as I've found it on "MeTV".
I will say that there are a few things that bug me. I guess it was perhaps '68 budgets, or perhaps they just didn't think anyone would notice - leave it to me 43 years later to pick at things ... a few examples:
- Richard Denning, of course, played the Governor; however, in an episode I watched the other night, he played some other official, driving to a crime scene in a Galaxy. I didn't really catch the title that he was portraying, but I thought it rather odd that they used Denning to play a completely different character.
- The cars ... I'm a huge '60's & '70's car fanatic, so perhaps I'm more prone that the rest of the world to notice some goof-ups. For instance: McGarrett is leaving the Palace in a black 2-door hardtop Mercury with red interior; he arrives on scene in his regular 4-door hardtop with black interior. If anyone can help me out, I never really was big into the Ford & Mercury scene - is his original 4-door car a Park Lane? If so, what year? Good looking car. Again, perhaps it was budget-related, but it seems that (in the mid-70's series), the same prop cars are in every episode (a dark green Marquis especially hits the screen a lot). Oh well, I shan't let that bother me - heck, part of the reason I like watching the original show is because of the sweet cars!
- Character actors ... especially in the mid-70's ... I haven't researched names, but I keep seeing the same actors playing completely different roles. Surely there wasn't a shortage of actors willing to be on this show, was there??
I'm through ranting - I love this show, and glad to have found a site dedicated to it. Thanks for sharing!
Could we add "Episodes" to the new menu, please?
